Auchentoshan Distillery

Auchentoshan is a Lowland distillery located near Glasgow. It was founded in 1823 by local corn merchant John Bulloch. Its name is Gaelic for ‘corner of the field’. John Bulloch’s son Archibald took over the distillery but went bankrupt the following year. Auchentoshan was sold to John Hart and local farmer Alexander Filshie in 1834. The distillery remained in the Filshie family for over four decades, until they were forced to sell it to C.H. Curtis & Company in 1877. They, in turn, sold it to John & George MacLachlan in 1903. Production ceased during the Second World War, during which time the distillery was also severely damaged in a German bomb raid. The distillery was acquired by the whisky blenders Morrison Bowmore in 1984. Auchentoshan is currently in the hands of the Japanese company Suntory, who bought Morrison Bowmore in 1994.
