Brora Distillery
The closed Highland distillery Brora was founded in 1819 by the Marquis of Stafford as the Clynelish Distillery. The distillery was known as Clynelish for most of its existence, until the new Clynelish Distillery opened in 1968. Only then did the distillery become known as Brora. The distillery was powered by locally-mined coal until 1960, when it switched to electricity. Between May 1969 and July 1973, Brora produced a heavily peated malt for blends to make up for a shortage of Islay whisky caused by a drought. After 1973, the distillery returned to the lightly peated Highland style. Brora was mothballed in March 1983. Diageo announced in 2017 that they would be reopening two of their closed distilleries: Port Ellen and Brora. Brora restarted production in 2020, using the distillery’s original copper stills.
