Campbeltown

The isolated area of Campbeltown was once known as the “whisky capital of the world” and at its height it boasted over 30 distilleries pumping out a few million gallons of the good stuff every year! But a drop in demand caused by the twin factors of US prohibition and a preference for lighter whisky styles and blends led to the decline of Campbeltown. As sales dropped off, the distillers started taking shortcuts and drove the remaining stills hard. This set off a cycle of spiraling demand, quality and value. But there has been a real resurgence of Campbeltown in recent years. The three remaining distilleries of Springbank, Glen Scotia and Glengyle have led the charge and put Campbeltown back on the whisky map. Campbeltown whiskies often display their coastal location with a distinct maritime note as well as smoke, flavours of toffee and fruit and an oily mouthfeel.
