Cardhu Distillery

The Cardhu distillery in Speyside produces some of the best-selling single malts in the world, but is primarily known as the spiritual home of Johnnie Walker. The distillery was founded in 1824 by John and Helen Cumming, who were already illegally distilling whisky in the years before they got a license. After John’s death in 1846, the distillery was taken over by his wife Helen and their son Lewis. When Lewis died in 1872, his wife Elizabeth gained control of the distillery, which flourished under her leadership. In 1893, Elizabeth sold Cardhu to John Walker & Sons, who used the distillery to produce whisky for their increasingly popular Johnnie Walker blend. Cardhu was acquired by Distillers Company Ltd. in 1930, nowadays known as Diageo.
