Czech Whisky

While the Czechs are much more known for their beer or their Slivovice, there is a tradition of Czech Whisky that includes brands such as Gold Cock and Hammer Head. During the Cold War it was very tricky to import Scotch from overseas and there was a gap in the market for locally produced Czech Whisky. Typically if someone wants to learn the whisky trade they are apprenticed at a distillery for a hands-on education. During the Cold War though, Czechs couldn’t just travel over to Scotland to learn about whisky so they had to learn the process entirely from books and trial and error. When the Berlin Wall fell the market was flooded with imported whisky and people forgot about Czech Whisky. So much so, when Stock Spirits bought Hammerhead, they found 1000s of barrels of quality whisky aging in casks that are now being bottled and sold.
