Fettercairn Distillery

Fettercairn was the second distillery to be (legally) established after the Excise Act of 1823. It was founded in 1824 by Sir Alexander Ramsay. When he ran into financial problems a few years later, he was forced to sell the distillery to Sir John Gladstone in 1830. The Gladstone family ran Fettercairn until 1926, when the distillery was mothballed as a result of the First World War and Prohibition. Associated Scottish Distillers Ltd. bought the distillery and restarted production in 1939. Fettercairn is currently in the hands of Whyte & Mackay, who acquired the distillery in 1973.
