Finnish Whisky

Finland is situated right at the top of the ‘Vodka Belt’ so you might be surprised to know that Finnish whisky has really come into vogue recently. Historically, Finnish whisky has had a tough time up against Vodka. In 1808 the ruling Russian government banned the import of neutral spirits, and this included whisky. Even after the ban was lifted there wasn’t a lot of interest. And then came prohibition in 1919. When it was finally repealed in 1932, the government-owned brewing monopoly Alko started to produce its own Finnish whisky which proved very popular and recently there have been a number of new brands popping up. Notable brands include Teerenpeli which is made from local Finnish ingredients and Kyrö, which makes a whisky from 100% Finnish rye!
