Glen Ord Distillery

Glen Ord is the last remaining distillery in the Black Isle region of the Scottish Highlands. It was founded in 1838 by Thomas Mackenzie. The distillery was sold to Alexander MacLennan and Thomas McGregor in 1855. After Alexander’s death in 1870, the distillery was taken over by his widow and her new husband, the banker Alexander Mackenzie. Alexander Mackenzie built a new still house in 1878, but production had barely started before a fire broke out and destroyed it. When Alexander Mackenzie died in 1896, Glen Ord was sold to James Watson & Co. John Dewar & Sons acquired the distillery in 1923. In 1966, the number of stills was increased from two to six. The distillery’s visitor center opened in 1988. Glen Ord produces whisky for Diageo, including Johnnie Walker blends and the Singleton series.
