Glen Scotia Distillery

Glen Scotia is one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland, and one of the three remaining Campbeltown distilleries. The distillery was founded in 1832 by Stewart & Galbraith Co. It was sold to Duncan McCallum in 1895. West Highland Malt Distillers took over in 1919, but when they went bankrupt only five years later, Duncan McCallum bought back the distillery. In 1930, Duncan McCallum was bankrupted in a business deal gone wrong, and he drowned himself in the Campbeltown Loch. It is said his spirit haunts the distillery to this day. Bloch Brothers Ltd took over Glen Scotia in 1933 and restarted production. The Canadian giant Hiram Walker acquired the distillery in 1954. A. Gillies & Co. took over only a year later. A. Gillies & Co. became part of Amalgamated Distilled Products in 1970. The distillery was reconstructed in 1979, and closed four years later. Amalgamated Distilled Products was taken over by Gibson International in 1986, and production at Glen Scotia restarted in 1989. In 1994, Glen Catrine Bonded Warehouse Ltd took over and mothballed the distillery. The distillery reopened in 1999 under Loch Lomond Distillery supervision, using staff from the nearby Springbank distillery. Since May 2000, Loch Lomond Distillery ran operations with its own staff. Hillhouse Capital Management acquired Loch Lomond Group in 2019, thus becoming the new owner of Glen Scotia.
