Glengyle Distillery

The Glengyle distillery was originally founded in 1872, but closed again in 1925. In 2004, Mitchell’s Glengyle Ltd. (led by Hedley Wright, the great-great nephew of Glengyle’s founder William Mitchell) rebuilt and reopened the Glengyle distillery. Because the Glengyle brand belongs to Loch Lomond Distillers, who use it for their blended malt, the Glengyle distillery bottles its whisky under the name Kilkerran. Kilkerran comes from the Gaelic Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain (‘head of the lake of Saint Kieran’s cell’), the name of a medieval settlement where Campbeltown stands today.
