Guadeloupean Rum

Guadeloupe is sometimes called the Butterfly Island because of the shape of the two larger islands. It’s a collection of six inhabited islands and a handful of uninhabited ones, nestled down in the Caribbean. Like many other Caribbean islands it is known for its rum production. There are two types of Guadeloupean Rum produced, Rhum Agricole made from freshly squeezed sugar cane juice and Rhum Industriel which is made from molasses. The distilleries tend to be small-scale, family owned operations with distinctive local qualities. At one time there were over 70 distilleries making Guadeloupean Rum but these days there are a lot fewer. This doesn’t mean that the quality is any less though. For many years Guadeloupe has had a friendly rivalry with the neighboring territory of Martinique competing for acknowledgement as the best agricole producer. Distilleries include Bologne, Damoiseau and Bellevue.
