Guyana Rum

Guyana’s rum history began in the 16th century when the English began growing sugarcane in the area. The sugar crops were so successful that Guyana became one of the largest suppliers of sugar to the British Empire. As is often the case, where there is sugar there is rum, and the rum industry had grown so large by the 18th century there were 384 distilleries throughout the country. Guyanese rum is known for its heavy and aromatic qualities with rich and fruity flavours. Often Guyanese Rum is called Demerara Rum after the Demerara River, which runs beside the Demerara Distillers Limited building which is famous for its El Dorado rum. Other brands include Lemon Hart, Expedition and Wood’s.
