Highlands

With 47 distilleries spread out across a vast area, The Highlands is the largest whisky region in Scotland. Because the region is so large and varied, there isn’t one dominant style. Whiskies from the North tend to be robust and full bodied such as Glenmorangie and Dalmore while those from the South tend to be light, fruity and dry like Aberfeldy. In the East, whiskies such as Glendronach are fruity drams with a bit more weight than the South and in the West you’ll find peaty, smoky and full bodied drops such as Oban and Ben Nevis, with ones nearer the coast showing a maritime quality. The oldest distillery is Glenturret with records going back to 1763 but new ones are also springing up such as 8 Doors way up in the North and the re-opening of the Brora distillery by Diageo.
