Illinois

These days when we think of American booze we instantly think about Kentucky Whiskey. But Kentucky wasn’t always the whiskey capital of the US. Back in the late 19th century, that title went to Peoria in Illinois, the original whiskey boomtown that accounted for 40% of all alcohol produced in the US by 1890. If it weren’t for Prohibition maybe we’d still be talking about Peoria today, but sadly the boomtown went bust. Now we’re seeing a resurgence in Illinois whiskey with brands like JK Williams, Black Band Distillery and Blaum Bros. The old Hiram Walker distillery was also based in Illinois, and while you can still find some dusty bottles out there, the stills ran dry in the 1980s.
