Indian Whisky

India is one of the largest whisky consumers in the world, but the country only recently entered the world stage when it comes to single malt. The majority of Indian whisky (about 90%) is not actually whisky at all: it is a blend of neutral spirits distilled from fermented molasses and an assortment of grains. Outside of India, this would be labeled a rum. The first Indian single malt was launched in 2004 by Amrut Distilleries, who have been in the distilling business since 1948. Indian whisky was brought into the spotlight in 2010, when whisky writer Jim Murray named the Amrut Fusion single malt whisky as the third best in the world. Other famous Indian single malt brands include Paul John and Rampur.
