Islay

Islay is the furthest southern island of the Inner Hebrides and is home to a clutch of very robust whiskies. It is most famous for its peated whiskies. The island has very few trees and so the peat bogs are typically free of rotting wood, resulting in a peat flavour that is considered by many people to be the finest. The region is also strongly influenced by the maritime climate so along with the strong peat and smoke flavours, Islay whisky typically exhibits briny, seaweed and medicinal flavours like iodine. The oldest distillery on Islay is Bowmore which can trace its history back to 1779, while the distilleries at Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Caol Ila and Ardbeg are known throughout the world. A lighter, less smoky style of whisky can be found at Bunnahabhain and Bruichladdich.
