Jack Daniel’s Distillery

Jasper Newton ‘Jack’ Daniel was born around 1850 as the youngest of 10 children. At a young age, he learned the art of whiskey distilling from preacher and distiller Dan Call and Nathan ‘Nearest’ Green, a formerly enslaved African American man who later became Jack Daniel’s first Master Distiller. Established in 1866, Jack Daniel’s was the first registered distillery in the United States. The distillery moved to its current location, near the Cave Spring Hollow, in 1884. Jack operated his distillery until 1907, when he left it to his nephew Lem Motlow. Jack Daniel passed away on October 9, 1911, but his legacy will live on for years to come.
