Jameson Distillery

Jameson Distillery Bow St. (originally the Bow Street Distillery) was founded in Dublin in 1780. The general manager, John Jameson, got full ownership of the distillery in 1805 and renamed it ‘John Jameson & Son’s Bow Street Distillery’ a couple of years later. By the end of the 19th century, the distillery had grown into a huge complex encompassing 5 acres, and it was often described as a ‘city within a city’. The Irish whiskey industry fell into decline in the 20th century and by the 1960s there were only three Irish distilleries left. Together they formed the Irish Distillers Group and consolidated production at the New Midleton Distillery. The Jameson Distillery Bow St. closed in 1971, but is still open today for guided tours.
