Karuizawa Distillery

The legendary closed distillery Karuizawa was founded in 1955 by Daikoku Budoshu, a large wine and spirits producer. It was located on the slopes of the active volcano Mount Asama, and was the smallest distillery in Japan at the time. The distillery initially only produced whisky intended for blends, but in 1977 the company changed their course and started to release single malts as well. Karuizawa bottlings never made an appearance on the international markets, however, and the distillery was mothballed in 2001. In 2011, the Number One Drinks Company bought the last few hundred casks from the Karuizawa distillery and has since been releasing them in limited quantities. However, stocks have been drying up and Karuizawa whisky is becoming increasingly rare.
