Kentucky

The history of Kentucky bourbon is shrouded in myths and legends. Colorful characters like Elijah Craig, who supposedly invented bourbon after accidentally charring some barrels and then deciding to store his whisky in them anyway dominate the story, but have little evidence behind them. We do know that distilling was brought to Kentucky by Scottish, Irish and other European immigrants who moved there to farm the fertile land. Corn was the dominant crop in the region which led to corn-based whisky production in farm stills. The origin of the name ‘bourbon’ is also uncertain. Possibly it was named in honor of the French Royal Family who helped the Americans in the War of Independence. Or maybe it is named after Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Either way, Kentucky is the home of bourbon and claims the lionshare of bourbon production in the US.
