Kurayoshi Distillery

Kurayoshi is a small whisky distillery, located at the foot of Mount Daisen in the Tottori Prefecture. It is part of the Matsui Shuzo brewery, which was founded in 1910 and produces sake and shochu. Until recently, the company imported spirits from distilleries in Scotland. They then aged it in Japan, and bottled it (somewhat controversially) as ‘Japanese whisky’. In 2017, the Kurayoshi Distillery installed three pot stills and began distilling its own whisky. The distillery sources crystal clear water from Mount Daisen, and ages its whisky in rare Mizunara (Japanese oak) and Sakura (cherry wood) barrels.
