Lowlands

The Lowlands are known for a lighter style of whisky compared to the Highlands, with floral, grassy and biscuit notes. The distinction between Highlands and Lowlands whisky is rooted in the politics of the 18th and 19th century. At that time illegal distillation was rampant in the Highlands, so in an effort to undercut the illegal distillers the government drew the Highland line and gave legitimate Highland distillers a few tax breaks. The poor Lowlands distillers missed out on these and so they ramped up production, but quality suffered terribly and eventually many went bankrupt. Recently there’s been a bit of a resurgence of Lowlands whisky with brands such as Glenkinchie and Auchentoshan, which still makes a traditional triple-distilled whisky like the Lowlands of old. There are also re-opened and new distilleries such as Lindores Abbey, Clydeside and Glasgow Distillery Company.
