Mortlach Distillery

The Mortlach distillery was founded by James Findlater in 1823 when the Excise Act was passed, making it legal to distill whisky in Scotland. Mortlach was the first legal distillery in Dufftown, and is named after the ancient parish in which the town is located. The distillery changed ownership several times in its early history. At one point it even became a brewery, as a result of James and John Grant moving all the distilling equipment to their new Glen Grant distillery. They sold Mortlach again immediately after (rude), but luckily the next owner replaced the stills and Mortlach became a whisky distillery again. For several years, Mortlach was the only distillery in Dufftown, until Glenfiddich was founded in 1887.
