New Zealand Whisky

Whisky making in The Land of the Long White Cloud goes back to the 1830s, when Scottish settlers in the Otago region took their whisky know-how and started distilling in their new New Zealand home. This burgeoning whisky industry was becoming so successful though that it started giving the Scots a run for their money. So the Scottish banks decided that they would only fund the building of NZ’s railways if the government cracked down on the distillers. It wasn’t until the 1970s when Willowbank Distillery opened that the New Zealand whisky culture resurfaced. Sadly it closed in 1997 but there are still a few bottles out there thanks to the New Zealand Whisky Collection who acquired Willowbank’s remaining stock These days a few small distilleries are springing up such as Thomson and Cardrona.
