They definitely take their whiskey seriously in Pennsylvania. So seriously in fact, that they even staged the whiskey rebellion in the 1790s. This armed uprising was a violent protest against taxes on distilled spirits. After a big struggle the tax was finally repealed, and even though Kentucky is more famous as a distilling state, the birthplace of American Whiskey is really Pennsylvania. The style of whiskey made here was predominantly rye and these days there is a new clutch of distilleries popping up all over Pennsylvania. Brands include Dad’s Hat, Wigle, Stoll and Wolfe, New Liberty and Liberty Pole. The predominance of “liberty” in the names of Pennsylvania Whiskey should give you a clue as to how much they value their Whiskey Rebellion Heritage! There is also Pennsylvania bourbon out there, such as Kinsey from New Liberty and Four Grain from Bluebird.
