Abhainn Dearg (Scottish Gaelic for ‘Red River’) is the most westerly distillery in Scotland. It is located in the town of Uig on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis, the largest island of the Outer Hebrides. The remote distillery was founded in 2008 by Mark Tayburn, and is the first legal distillery in the Outer Hebrides in almost 200 years. The eponymous Red River (named for a bloody battle between the locals and Vikings in the Dark Ages) provides the distillery with soft, pure water. Abhainn Dearg 2008 Outer Hebrides is the distillery’s inaugural single malt bottling. It was distilled in 2008 and bottled by hand in October 2011. This is one of 2011 bottles drawn from a single cask. The bottle comes in a nicely crafted wooden box.
