Alberta Premium 5 Years Old Japanese Import is a vintage Canadian rye whisky, produced by Alberta Distillers for the Japanese market. It is the ancestor of the Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye, which was named ‘2021 World Whisky of the Year’ by whisky critic Jim Murray. Alberta Distillers was founded in 1946 by oil magnate Frank McMahon and rancher Max Bell. Because they didn’t know much about distilling whisky, they started to work together with the successful distiller George Reifel, who helped them grow the company. Located on the outskirts of Calgary, Alberta Distillers is the largest producer of rye whisky in the world. The distillery is currently owned by Beam Suntory. The tax strip on this bottle says ‘1971’.
