While usually not the first country that springs to mind, Canada once had a vibrant whisky industry. Many small distilleries flourished, but high alcohol taxes and the rise of the temperance movement in the late 19th century meant that only the large companies such as J.P. Wiser and Hiram Walker managed to keep their head above water. Alberta Distillers is a relatively new Canadian distiller. It was founded in 1946 by oil magnate Frank McMahon and rancher Max Bell. Because they didn’t know too much about distilling whisky, they started to work together with the successful distiller George Reifel, who helped them grow the company. In 1987, Alberta Distillers was taken over by Fortune Brands which later became part of Beam Suntory. The distillery is now the largest producer of rye whisky in the world and produces a wide range of products, including the award-winning Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye. Alberta Springs Canadian Whisky 1979 is a vintage Canadian whisky from Alberta Distillers, distilled in 1979 and bottled at 40% ABV. The bottle comes with its original wooden box.
