Ardbeg 30 Years Old Very Old 1990s is a very rare 1990s bottling of Ardbeg single malt. The expression is made up of just 29 casks, distilled in the 1960s and aged for 30 years on the wild shoreline of Islay. It was released in 1996 by owners Allied Distillers. At this point, Ardbeg had been silent for about 15 years. It closed in March 1981 and only occasionally conducted experiments and provided parts to the nearby Laphroaig distillery, also owned by Allied. Throughout its existence, the majority of Ardbeg’s production was intended for blends and people had to rely on independent bottlers for a taste of Ardbeg single malt. This is where the history of Ardbeg’s cult status begins: fuelled by the increasing scarcity as well as whisky critic Jim Murray’s praise for the distillery, it began accumulating a steady following of loyal fans. Only when Glenmorangie bought Ardbeg in 1997, the distillery fully reopened and began focusing on single malts. While Ardbeg has been saved from oblivion and is now thriving, its cult following remains to this day.
