Ardbeg had a very stormy few years during the 1980s and 1990s, and at its lowest points there were fears the distillery would disappear forever. The team at Ardbeg squirreled away a few casks for safekeeping just in case the worst should happen. Thankfully Ardbeg’s fortunes improved, but what to do with those old casks? Well, they’ve decided to bottle them, and given how low production was at the time these casks were filled, there’s very little of this Ardbeg Twenty One floating around. The nose has a great whiff of lemon and salt spray and later sweet peat and vanilla. The palate has a peppery glow with moss, herbs and floral honey. The finish is nice and peppery.
