Ben Nevis 43 Years Old Maltman Vintage Single Cask 1972 has been patiently maturing for 43 years in the shadow of Britain’s tallest mountain, Ben Nevis. The distillery that bears its name sits just at the foot of the slope and was founded by Long John Macdonald in 1825 making it one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. As well as having a totally awesome nickname, Long John Mac was a pretty deft hand at whisky making too and the tradition at Ben Nevis has been going strong for almost 200 years. This Ben Nevis 43 Years Old Maltman Vintage Single Cask 1972 is bottled from a single vintage cask, cask no. 1 to be precise. It’s brought to us by the independent bottler The Maltman and it only yielded 261 bottles so it’s definitely a rare beast. It has a complex nose of leather, tobacco, fruits sprinkled with clove and cinnamon and sweet sherry. The palate is oily and leathery with dark fruit, oak and chocolate while the finish is long with molasses, oak wood, black tea and a slight bitterness.
