Benromach was mothballed in 1983 and only reopened in 1998, when it was revived by Gordon & MacPhail. This Benromach 21 Years Old, launched in 2020, contains some of the first spirit distilled after the reopening. It matured for 21 years in first-fill bourbon and sherry casks, resulting in a subtly smoky Speyside whisky. Sweet sherry aromas are immediately present on the nose, joined by citrus, ginger, oak and smoke. The palate is sweet with flavours of cracked black pepper, Seville orange, raspberry, baked apple and subtle spice. The finish is soft and smoky with a touch of charred oak.
