A 12-year-old Blair Athol single malt, released as part of Diageo’s Flora & Fauna series. The Flora & Fauna series was introduced by Diageo (then known as United Distillers) in the 1990s. The range showcases some of Diageo’s lesser-known distilleries, whose whiskies are generally used in blends or released as independent bottlings. Originally nameless, the series was dubbed ‘Flora & Fauna’ by whisky author Michael Jackson, a nod to the drawings of animals and plants on the labels. The Highland distillery Blair Athol was founded in 1798 by John Stewart and Robert Robertson as the Aldour Distillery, named after the nearby Allt Dour burn. The distillery was expanded in 1825 and renamed the Blair Athol Distillery. Blair Athol was forced to close in 1932 due to recession and Prohibition in the United States. It only resumed production in 1949. The distillery mainly produces whisky for Bell’s blends, making single malt bottlings rare.
