In the late 1960s, a drought hit Islay and most of the distilleries on the island were forced to cut back production. This caused a shortage of peated whiskies for blending. Brora (the original Clynelish distillery) stepped up to the plate and began producing a heavily peated style of whisky. In July 1973, Brora reverted back to a lightly peated Highland style and by 1983, the distillery was mothballed. Brora 28 Years Old Douglas Laing Old Malt Cask 1971 is a single cask bottling from this cult distillery, released by Douglas Laing for the Old Malt Cask range. The whisky was distilled in February 1971 and matured for 28 years, before being bottled in December 1999, at 50% ABV. Only 283 bottles were produced.
