The Bruichladdich distillery on Islay went through some turbulent times in the 1990s. In January 1995, the distillery was mothballed as it was deemed ‘surplus to requirements’. The distillery only reopened in May 2001, after a group of private investors led by Mark Reynier of Murray McDavid purchased it and brought it back to working conditions. Bruichladdich 12 Years Old Ancien Regime 1998 is a special bottling that was released to mark the acquisition and rebirth of Bruichladdich. The single malt was distilled in June 1998 and matured for 12 years in bourbon casks, before being bottled in 2011 at 46%. We hear you thinking: ‘1998, but didn’t you just say the distillery was closed back then?’ Great question! For just six weeks in the summer of 1998, Bruichladdich was in production again. The spirit produced during this period was the last to be distilled under the old ownership. Bruichladdich 12 Years Old Ancien Regime 1998 saw a limited release of just 2500 bottles.
