The Bruichladdich distillery on Islay went through some turbulent times in the 1990s. In January 1995, the distillery was mothballed as it was deemed ‘surplus to requirements’. The distillery only reopened in May 2001, after a group of private investors led by Mark Reynier of Murray McDavid purchased it and brought it back to working conditions. Bruichladdich 9 Years Old Renaissance 2001 is the second edition in a series of bottlings released to mark the acquisition and rebirth of Bruichladdich. The single malt was among the very first spirit to run from the stills. It was distilled on 11 September 2001 and matured for 9 years in ex-bourbon casks, before being bottled in May 2011 at 46%. Only 2500 individually numbered bottles of the Bruichladdich 9 Years Old Renaissance 2001 have been released.
