Bruichladdich’s immensely popular Octomore range contains some of the most heavily peated single malt whiskies in the world. First released in 2008, Octomore has gained a cult following of peat lovers all around the world. Bruichladdich Octomore 5 Years Old Edition 07.1/208 is made from barley harvested from mainland Scotland and peated to 208ppm. The whisky aged for 5 years in American oak casks and was bottled in 2015 at 59.5%. On the nose, you’ll initially find aromas of sea spray, caramel, lemon balm and pipe tobacco. The peat smoke slowly rises from the glass and is joined by vanilla, mint, toffee, golden syrup and almond. Peach follows with pear syrup and buttercup. The palate is velvety smooth and warming, with a beautiful balance of American oak notes, smoke and soft fruits. Vanilla, honey and citrus rise up and are joined by sea spray, leather, smoked mussels and creme brûlée. The sweetness from the oak fades and is replaced by a touch of salt and lingering peat smoke on the finish. A sweet and gentle dram with a peat intensity and hidden depths.
