This 14-year-old Coarse Grain Oak whiskey is part of Buffalo Trace’s Experimental Collection. The distillery is constantly experimenting to make their whiskey even better, and once in a blue moon they release some of these hidden gems. Coarse Grain Oak is part of an experiment which investigated the influence of oak on the whiskey. For this experiment, two bourbons of the same mash bill were matured in two different barrels: one made of coarse wood grain from fast-growing trees, the other made of a finer grained wood from slow-growing trees. The coarse grain wood created a dry and smoky whiskey with herbal qualities. Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection Coarse Grain Oak was distilled in July 1994 and matured in a charred white oak barrel for 14 years and 9 months. It was bottled on 7 May 2009 at 45% ABV.
