If you look on the front of this bottle of Bunnahabhain 18 Years Old Small Batch you’ll see the sea-faring Scotsman at the wheel of his ship. For decades after it was founded in 1881 the only way in and out of the distillery was by sea. Sailors would bring in supplies by ship, and then sail away with a hold full of whisky to sell. The times eventually caught up with Bunnahabhain in 1960 when a road was built for trucks to access the distillery. But ships were still coming in right up until 1993 when the last ship sailed off into the sunset. They may have been slow to embrace motor traffic but in the last few years Bunnahabhain has done a lot of modernising with a major rebrand in 2006 resulting in the release of the 18 year old. They have now also moved to zero added colourings and zero chill filtration so that every bottle contains the purest drop of their whisky. The nose of the Bunnahabhain 18 Years Old Small Batch is an elegant mix of dried fruits, toffee, spice and honey-coated nuts. After 18 years maturing by the seaside, the palate is teensy bit salty, but also features sherry, dried fruit, oak and toffee. The finish is dry with a touch of spice, salt and fruit.
