After conquering vast swathes of Europe the Vikings are back to conquer your whisky shelf! And with a whopping ABV of 58.8% it’s fair to say they’ve packed some heavy weapons. The whiskies in Signatory Vintage’s Viking series tramp all across Scotland but this particular example is from Caol Ila in Islay. Created in collaboration with the German importer Kirsch, this series was exclusively bottled for Germany. The label features the work of Tom Thiel whose artwork can also be found on the album covers of death metal band Amon Amarth. Vikings, Swords, Death Metal…what kind of a drop are we in for! Well the nose of Caol Ila 8 Years Old Signatory Vintage Viking Series 2012 has sweet smoke and leather along with coffee and chocolate. The palate packs a bit of wallop with strong smoky and oaky flavours surrounding chocolate and spice. The finish is an enjoyable bitterness with the oaky spice hanging around right until the end. Only 690 bottles were produced so snag one before they all sail off.
