The Speyside distillery Caperdonich was founded in 1898 and only operated for four years before closing. It was originally called ‘Glen Grant #2’, since it was built by the founders of the Glen Grant distillery. By the time it opened again in 1965, it was forbidden to have two distilleries using the same name, so it was renamed ‘Caperdonich’, meaning ‘secret well’ in Gaelic. The distillery then operated for almost four decades before being closed in 2002. The building was demolished in 2010. This 18-year-old Caperdonich single malt was bottled in 2019, meaning it was distilled just before the distillery closed. This small batch release is some of the last whisky distilled at the bygone distillery. As the bottle says: ‘Once gone, there will never be another.’
