The Cardhu distillery in the Speyside valley started out as an illicit farm distillery run by John and Helen Cumming. The operation was safeguarded by Helen, who had contrived a system to avoid being caught: she would keep a lookout for the authorities, and when she saw them coming over the hill she’d hoist a red flag up the flagpole, alerting other illegal distillers to hide away any incriminating equipment. These days Cardhu is part of Diageo, and is best known for providing the core element to Johnnie Walker’s blends. Cardhu 18 Years Old 2013 is a well-matured single malt from the distillery’s core range, aged in bourbon and sherry casks for nearly two decades. It is a complex dram with aromas of cooked fruits, wild roses, menthol, polished leather and Christmas cake on the nose. The palate is full-bodied and soft, balancing sweet and warming layers with a light and lively acidity. At the core are delicate fruit notes, surrounded by hints of chocolate, toffee and citrus, leading to a long finish of cocoa and spices.
