The state-run Caroni Distillery on the Caribbean island of Trinidad was a famous producer of heavy rums in the 20th century, but the island’s sugar-growing industry collapsed and the distillery was shut down in 2002. Rum expert Luca Gargano, CEO of the renowned Italian bottling company Velier, discovered a large stock of vintage rum barrels in the distillery’s old warehouses while on a research trip in Trinidad. The majority of Caroni’s remaining stock is now in the hands of Velier, who occasionally release highly sought-after bottlings of this rare rum. Caroni 12 Years Old 100% Trinidad Rum 100 Proof was distilled in 2000 and matured in the tropics for 12 years. It was bottled in March 2012 at 50% ABV.
