The Caroni Distillery on the Caribbean island of Trinidad was a famous producer of heavy rums in the 20th century, but the island’s sugar-growing industry collapsed and the distillery was shut down in 2002. Luckily, while on a research trip in Trinidad, Luca Gargano discovered a large stock of vintage rum barrels in the distillery’s old warehouses. His bottling company Velier started releasing the famous rum. This high-proof rum is part of the Caroni Employees series, which honors the employees who spent many years at the distillery before it closed. In April 2019, Luca Gargano and a group of Caroni lovers selected this blend of 8 casks distilled in 2000. The rum matured in Trinidad until 2008, when it was moved to Guyana and aged for another 10 years. It was put in a neutral tank in October 2019, and bottled in 2020 at 65.2%. This edition is dedicated to Nita ‘Nitz’ Hogan, who worked at the distillery for 30 years. Only 1247 bottles of Caroni 2000 Special Edition 3rd Release Nita ‘Nitz’ Hogan have been released.
