The Caroni Distillery on the Caribbean island of Trinidad was a famous producer of heavy rums in the 20th century, but the island’s sugar-growing industry collapsed and the distillery was shut down in 2002. Luckily, while on a research trip in Trinidad, Luca Gargano discovered a large stock of vintage rum barrels in the distillery’s old warehouses. His bottling company Velier started releasing the famous rum. This high-proof rum is part of the Caroni Employees series, which is dedicated to the employees who spent many years at the distillery before it closed. The rum was distilled in 1996 and bottled in 2021 at 66.3%. This bottle features Dhanraj ‘Dan’ Maharaj, who worked at Caroni for 22 years. Only 730 bottles of Caroni 25 Years Old Dhanraj ‘Dan’ Maharaj 5th Release 1996 have been released.
