Compass Box Deluxe Three Years Old

Have you ever seen a bottle of whisky so proudly (and obnoxiously) display that it is only three years old? Spoiler: it’s not. This blended malt was created solely to poke fun at a new set of regulations that prevents whisky makers from putting the exact contents of a blend on the bottle. The only age they are allowed to share is that of the youngest component: even one drop of a five-year-old malt in a barrel of 30-year-old whisky legally makes the whole thing five years old. Compass Box strongly opposes these new rules and created this Three Year Old Deluxe blended malt as part of their campaign for greater transparency in the Scotch industry. Only 0.4% of the blend is actually 3 years old. It’s main component (90.3%) is a considerably older malt from Clynelish that matured in a refill hogshead. The remaining 9.3% is a Talisker malt that matured in a first-fill sherry butt. The blend was bottled in August 2016 at 49.2%. Compass Box Three Years Old Deluxe’s label bursts with sarcasm and we love it. The whisky itself is also pretty amazing. What are we saying – it’s from Compass Box, of course it is. Only 3282 bottles of this limited-edition blended malt were released.
