The art of whiskey is diverse and ever-evolving. One of the most recent exciting developments comes from Origin Spirits in Ireland: Currach, a single malt finished in seaweed-charred casks. A perfect union of the Irish land and sea. This single cask edition of Currach was selected exclusively for Belgium and the Netherlands. The whiskey is triple distilled and first matured in an ex-bourbon cask. It was then finished in an Atlantic Kombu seaweed-charred Oloroso sherry cask, and bottled in September 2021 at a cask strength of 58.4%. The result is a truly unique Irish whiskey, rich and multi-layered with a delicate umami character. Fun fact: the name ‘Currach’ comes from a traditional Irish boat that has its origins in the Neolithic era. The canoe-like boat made of wicker, animal skins and tar has been used by monks to traverse the Atlantic Ocean, by distillers to transport whiskey to Scotland, and is still used today to harvest seaweed.
