After a period of aged stock shortage, Dalwhinnie is finally able to offer an older expression again. This special limited release was bottled in 2012 as part of Diageo’s annual Special Releases. This 1987 aged in rejuvenated ex-bourbon American oak hogsheads for 25 years, and was bottled at a cask strength of 52.1%. 5358 bottles have been released. The nose opens with soft honeycomb and fresh fruit notes, then builds to complex layers of sweet wood shavings, heather, cream soda, nutty dryness and chocolate ice cream. The palate is full-bodied and smooth with initially sweet honeycomb, oily malt and drying winey notes. This is followed by elegant vanilla-laced tannins and spices. The finish is long and warming with a rich oaky spiciness.
