Fire in the Hole!! This is one explosive bourbon. Elijah Craig Barrel Proof – Release #5 is aged for 12 years and bottled at a whopping cask strength of 67.4%. The Barrel Proof series from Elijah Craig is uncut, straight from the barrel with no chill filtering, just as if you were there in the rickhouse sampling with the master distiller. The different batch numbers have a little code to them. The letters (A, B or C) tell us if it was the first, second or third bottling for the year. The first digit tells us the month it was bottled and the last two tell us the year. So this little ripper was the second release of 2014, bottled in May. The nose has lots of oak, along with vanilla, molasses, strawberries and black cherries. The palate is also oaky but this time with cinnamon, coffee and dark chocolate before a very long finish of nutmeg, clove, licorice and pine. A real beastly bourbon.
