Prohibition went into effect on January 17, 1920. Americans had to make do without whiskey as well as the influx of spirits from abroad. Luckily the legendary rum runner Bill McCoy stepped up to the plate to provide people with the Caribbean rum they craved. While many other bootleggers watered down their alcohol or added flavourings, good ol’ Billy McCoy was dedicated to authenticity and quality, earning his rums the nickname ‘The Real McCoy’. Filmmaker Bailey Pryor made a documentary about this iconic Prohibition figure in 2012, and then teamed up with Richard Seale from the Foursquare distillery in Barbados to launch a brand inspired by Bill McCoy. Foursquare 12 Years Old Real McCoy Prohibition Tradition Rum 100th Anniversary is a special release of The Real McCoy to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Bill McCoy’s rum running business. This small batch rum was crafted from column and pot still distillates, and aged for 12 years in a combination of American ex-bourbon and virgin white oak barrels. It is bottled at 100 proof, or 50% ABV. Just 6000 bottles were released, so better grab it fast!
